Midnight Metric

Lately I've been thinking about hosting some type of gravel event and the leading idea at the moment is a gravel metric run entirely at night.  The idea comes from the Night Nonsense race I did last October and since it's not looking like they'll be running that one again I though maybe I'd pick up on the format to keep it alive.  I don't know at this time whether it'd be a race or just an organized ride, but it would probably be run sometime around the second or third Saturday of October.  It would likely leave from Mount Vernon, IA at 8pm and hit the roads to the south.  One could expect a few miles of B roads, including a one mile stretch within the first few miles of the race.  This is all preliminary right now and may not happen, but if there's enough interest and I can work out the details over the next week, then I may just go ahead with it.  So, that being said...

Whaddya think?

  1. I like the idea of a ride not a race. What about later season like December? you can start at sunset at like 5:00pm and finish around 12m and camp somewhere for the night (some epic winter stuff)

  2. I think that's a good idea, but maybe in snowbike format rather than gravel ride, with gravel being plan B in case there's no snow. Honestly, a ride would be more fun for me than a race since race directors rarely get to ride in their events. Also, if it's just a ride then I'd probably be game for having more than just the one (i.e. gravel in October, snow in December). I'll see if anyone else wants to chime in.

  3. I just purchased the 'new version' of magicshine lights, the one that doesn't burn your house down. Craig, I'll be in your area tomorrow just for the nutz of it I am going to ride the Cedar Valley trail 104 miler round trip.

  4. Right on! Depending on what time you're out there you may run into me. I do a ride with my gal and some work friends on the trail every Wednesday evening.

One thing you should be aware of... I believe there is a bridge out somewhere past Brandon so you'll probably have a minor reroute.

  5. The path got crazy in Brandon, was like I was going through somebody's backyard. I went 40 miles and turned around for a total of 80 with a lot of trees being down, I don't know if they are keeping that end of the trail up or not, didn't see a soul or was there much of a path. I didn't have lights next time I will pack lights and hike over the trees and see what happens. I cleared several trees myself, but in some cases there were some big piles. I didn't read this to afterwards, maybe we passed each other and didn't know. 10 miles past Collin's road seems I was the only one out there.
